Abdominal postoperative pain can cause chronic pain and long-term consequences. In children, it is still a significant problem as there is still a lack of evidence of its optimum treatment. The objective was to assess the impact of a preoperative block of the vagal nerve on postoperative pain in the PACU and on children's quality of life. Children undergoing laparoscopic adenotonsillectomy were randomly distributed into a control group or a group with preoperative vagal nerve block. Children were assessed for pain and quality of life using validated questionnaires at PACU admission, 6 h, and 24 h after surgery. Quality of life was assessed using the validated VASEWE questionnaire. Anterior abdominal spreading of bupivacaine with adrenaline at 1.5 mL.kg(-1) was performed. Pain was assessed at 6 h and 24 h using a Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Data were analysed for statistical differences using the Student's t test for independent samples and the chi2 test was used to evaluate the differences in the frequency of observations. Thirty-five children were included. There was no difference in pain between the 2 groups at any of the studied times. Quality of life was not significantly different between the 2 groups for any of the studied times. Preoperative vagal nerve block does not reduce pain at 24 h after surgery in children.[Influenza vaccination of active workers in occupational settings].
